The Aberdeen City mobile library was taken off the road on 16 December 2011, as it was no longer fit for purpose and replacement costs were prohibitive. In January 2012 they introduced a decentralised service to the housebound and those in sheltered housing from a small people carrier which delivers book bags containing stock, profiled to the reading preferences of the residents, selected by staff at the nearest community library.
Kingswells had been the only remaining street stop on the mobile library run and we have continued to visit Kingswells once a fortnight on Friday afternoons where we have introduced a visiting service which operates from the Community Centre. We keep a core collection of books and DVDs stored at the Community Centre in lockable book trolleys and this is topped up and refreshed by staff when they visit the Centre.
We also provide a free online reservation service for stock listed in the library catalogue and reservations are available to collect from library staff during visits.
This service was introduced as a pilot project and will be reviewed as part of an ongoing joint review of Library & Information Services and Community Learning that has a remit to look into new ways of working.  Should you require any further details please contact me at the address below.
