The first public consultation event on the dual zoning of Fernilea School and Hazlehead School will be held from 7pm until 8pm on Wednesday, September 21, at Hazlehead School.

A public meeting to discuss the rezoning of the other schools will take place from 7pm until 8pm on Thursday, September 22, at Hazlehead Academy.

Five city schools could see their boundaries rezoned under new plans.

A period of statutory consultation for two proposals put forward by Aberdeen City Council is under way.

The first of the consultations is a proposal to remove an area of dual zoning for Fernielea School and Hazlehead School and to include this area within the zone for Hazlehead School only, from August 1, 2017.

The second proposal is to adjust the school zone boundaries for Fernielea School, Kingswells School, Hazlehead Academy and the new Countesswells secondary school.

This would provide for an amended catchment area as a result of the Maidencraig development, as of August 1, 2017.

A small part of the Maidencraig development, to the west of the site, falls within the Kingswells School and Countesswells secondary school zones.

If the school zone boundaries in this area were to be left unchanged, this would mean that children living in this part of the site would be required to cross the A944 Lang Stracht.

Councillor Angela Taylor, convener of education and children’s services committee, said: “These are important proposals in line with this council’s vision to improve the learning opportunities and

better outcomes for all our children. I would encourage parents, pupils, staff and the wider school community with an interest in these proposals to get involved in these consultations as their views are a key part of the consultation process.”

Both consultations will run until 5pm on Friday, October 7, with a report on the outcomes due to go before the education and children’s services committee in January 2017.
