MSP CALLS FOR KINGSWELLS SUPERFAST INTERNET THROUGH CITY DEAL

MARK McDonald is calling for Aberdeen City Council to invest in advanced technologies to support the implementation on fibre broadband in Kingswells.

The Aberdeen Donside MSP is urging the local authority to explore using money from the City Deal to improve internet services for residents in communities previously let down by BT.

Part of Kingswells is serviced by infrastructure which will not support super fast fibre broadband, and BT has declared it has no plans to provide a commercial upgrade for residents.

Mr McDonald said: “For several years now my constituents have had to tolerate disappointing responses to calls for superfast broadband as BT insist it would not be commercially viable in areas of Kingswells.

“The council have earmarked funds for digital transformation, but I am particularly interested to know if technology based solutions can be implemented to improve internet speeds for the community. In particular if the infrastructure that is currently in place could be replaced, or another creative solution found, which would assist my constituents.

“We know that around 5% of homes in Scotland will present a challenge in the SNP’s ambitious target to get superfast connections installed across the country and it is vital that every opportunity to reach out to communities is realised, including smart use of the funding coming into our city.”
