Adventure Comes To Kingswells

Kingswells School is to become an outdoor adventure hub.

Aberdeen school to become adventure base

Work to start at Kingswells Primary

WORK is set to start on transforming an old Aberdeen school into a £400,000 outdoor adventure base.

The old Kingswells Primary School officially closed its doors to pupils a decade ago.

The granite building has since been used as a nursery and a meeting place for a Kingswells youth group.

But the former school is set to be transformed into an adventure base for one of the Aberdeen’s main sports groups by spring next year.

Adventure Aberdeen, the brand name for Aberdeen City Council’s outdoor education service, has taken over the Fairley Road site at Kingswells.

And builders are set to move in next Monday to start the refurbishment on the building – which will replace the service’s current premises at Summerhill Education Centre on Aberdeen’s Lang Stracht.

David Wright, service manager for communities at Aberdeen City Council, said the new “more inspiring” location would help provide a better service to community groups and businesses.

Aberdeen building firm Burns Construction is to take on the work.

The building is to be made into offices, changing rooms, briefing rooms, and equipment stores.

In March this year, Kingswells Community Council voiced concerns the village youth group would have to close when the site was taken over.

But the council has vowed to help the club of up to 30 kids find an alternative meeting place.

Chairwoman of Kingswells Community Council Barrie Buchan welcomed the new adventure facility. She said: “It will be an asset to Kingswells.”
