Engineers help Kingswells Primary Build Car for Race Challenge.

Aberdeen firm Aker Solutions sponsors team taking part in greenpower event.

PUPILS from the north-east are designing, building and racing their own eco-cars as part of a national construction challenge.

Bankhead Academy and Kingswells Primary School pupils are taking part in the Greenpower Challenge, with the help of a top engineer from an Aberdeen firm.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Greenpower event aims to promote an interest in engineering and technology by involving young people in designing, building and racing their own electric racing cars.

Open to anyone aged nine to 21, in full or part-time education, the competition is split into three age groups.

The formula for primary schools involves each team building a standard kit car. For secondary schools the specification is more open-ended and for teams aged 16-21 competitors are challenged to build a faster car.

Aker Solutions mechanical engineer Scott McKendrick has been mentoring them to prepare for the challenge.

He said: “Building and racing an electric car is not only an exciting way for young people to gain an insight into engineering, but it also makes them aware of the energy issues that we all face.

“Greenpower approaches engineering from a less mainstream direction than normal lessons or after-school clubs. It also encourages creativity, enthusiasm and co-operation in problem-solving – invaluable skills for any young person whether they decide to pursue an engineering career or not.
