Start a New Community Council
To start a new community council in one of the areas without one we need to receive a request to start a community council signed by 20 people who are on the electoral role and reside within the community council area.

Every three years all of our community councils stand for re-election. The Full community council election timetable can be downloaded below.

We are currently working to enhance the role of community councils so that they can have more influence on decisions that affect their area. They receive an annual running costs grant and a £3,000 Small Improvements Fund to spend on their area. They are also key participants in the Council’s new approach to neighbourhood planning. Informal support and training is provided for community councillors.

Community councils are important because they are the first rung on the ladder of government – they give local people the right to have their views considered and they can deal with any local concern from litter and road safety to planning and housing – so everyone should make sure their area has a community council.
