Community Councils get Small Improvements Fund

Community Councils in Aberdeen are to be handed extra money to fund improvement projects in their local areas.

Community Councils in Aberdeen are to be handed extra money to fund improvement projects in their local areas.

Aberdeen City Council is awarding £3,000 to each group, annually, to allow them to take direct action in their communities and raise their own profile.

The Small Improvement Fund is available to all existing Community Councils in the city and forms part of a wider programme to enhance their role and enable them to play an effective role in delivering services locally.

The SIF will enable community councils to undertake small improvements that can quickly solve a minor issue or problem; provide a facility that would not otherwise be prioritised by the City Council, or to do something that promotes community spirit.

One of the first projects to benefit will be a music group for young people at Rosemount Community Centre.

Rosemount Community Council has allocated a portion of its SIF funding towards the refurbishment of a storeroom, to create a rehearsal and performance area within the centre.
Council Leader Kate Dean visited the group - along with Community Councillors from across the city - to launch the new funding deal.

She said: "The Council has taken huge steps forward to deliver services locally in response to local need - and this fund allows Community Council to become part of that.

"We want to give Community Councils a higher profile and more influence in their local areas and to do that we have to give them the resources to address some local priorities.

"This project is a perfect example of the kind of thing Community Councils will now be able to assist with."
