| I'm thinking about swtiching from BT BB to the new Sky package. Does anyone else have this and is it working well? |

| I saw the advert too for the 3 in 1 package. I'm sure there is something in the small print about only being available in areas with cable... now what ever happened to cable in Aberdeen? |

Sky broadband is available for Kingswells customers - the exchange at Westhill has been upgrade with the SKY/Easynet equipment since 23/06/2007.
In addition bundled call/broadband packages are available from TalkTalk and AOL (the exchange was upgraded to support AOL on 05/11/2007). |

| Am I right in thinking that the Sky/TalkTalk and AOL products involved these companies installing their own equipment in the exchange?
If so does that mean that those Kingswells residents served by the new BT cabinets are unable to use these services? |

| Just wanted to say that I tried to order Sky Broadband recently and despite looking into it for a couple of days (because we're on fibre) they informed me that they couldn't supply it just now (don't know what they're final excuse was as my wife took the call and never asked). |

If you read AlanB on 9 jan you will note that he had problems, I would be very surprised if anyone on green cabinets is on Sky. There is a comment from Admin on 20 Nov 2007 that Sky was available in Kingswells but so are all ISPs but from what I have learned none are familiar with the Green cabinet technology and therefore tend to shy away saying BB not available in Kingswells! I would be very interested to hear from anyone in the "special" zone has successfully connected to SkyBB, I would also like to hear from anyone who signed up to Greenbee. |

| I've tried Sky BB in Concraig, but was not successful due to Incompatible technology. The same message from BT. So no broadband at all! Who do I contact and how do I get them to set up BB? |

| I can understand you not being able to deal with SKY but I cannot understand the problem with BT. Do you get your telephone service from BT? Did you try to order BB by phone or on-line? |

| I had called BT three times that afternoon. First I was told the order was cancelled because of incompatible technology. On my second attempt, I was told it was a business account they tried to set up and failed so it was cancelled. That's when I posted my previous post. However, because I never received a letter or call telling me the order was cancelled and they needed the Hub back, I called them again later that afternoon. On that third call I was told the problem was being looked at and my broadband request had not been cancelled after all. An absolute nightmare considering I called the same number on all attempts! I was promised as call as soon as they managed to get it running. I've now been waiting for 10 days since the predicted activation date. I guess I'll just have to be patient now. How long could this take? |

I am afraid your story brings all the bad memories flooding back. BB became available in Concraig on 18 January 2007,I placed an order on 26 January 2007 and got an activation date of 2 February, this date came and went with no BB,after several calls I was eventually connected on 15 February. You would have thought that after nearly 3 years of the "new technology" they would have some idea of what goes on in the "green cabinet" zone. As a last resort you can contact the Chief Executive of BT Ian Livingston,in a previous life he was head man at BT Retail,I have had conversations with their office on other matters and find them to be very helpful. The current MD BT Customer Services is Nigel Stagg. I hope you don't have to go that far up the ladder but hope you find this info useful. Our problem in this part of Kingswells is that we do not get the BB connection directly from the exchange hence the green cabinets, which is why SKY and other ISP's have difficulty deal with requests for connection. |

| I have just tried to find out on the status of the activation, but unfortunately was met we the usual refrain: cancelled by BT wholesale due to incompatible technology. I asked why I was not contacted if it truly was cancelled and apparently it's cancelled on the wholesale system but not on the sales system. I assume it's not been cancelled just yet, but I need to figure out who to ask for when I call as most of them have no clue what's going on. Should I continue trying to call? How do I get the contact details of the people higher up the ladder if all else fails? |

| I tried to sign up to a SKY package in December for TV SKY Talk and Broadband. The TV part was installed very quickly, I even got n HD SKY box although I did not subscribe to HD. SKY talk was activatd on 21 January by I got a phone call last Sunday from SKY advising me that they could not provide a broadband service as there was a TPON on my line. What this meant was that BT deliver my phone by fibre optic cable and SKY cannot cope with this technology. It seems that TALK TALK may also have the same problems. The area in Kingswells affected by this is Concraig, Wellside And Derbeth. This is why you often see BT Openreach vans at the green street boxes making the connection from fibre to copper. |

We knew we were going to have this problem three years ago when the green cabinet technology was set up, We get our broadband service from the cabinets not directly from the exchange because we are too far away from the exchange. Sky and talk talk both operate from their equipment in the exchange (LLU) I think if they needed the business that badly they would work with open-reach to provide the service but it probably is not cost effective for them to do so. |

| I'm in the middle of switching to sky. If going from fibre optic to copper is how they can provide the service will this not result in reduced performance? I'm currently with BT and not getting the greatest of speeds, rarely above 2Mb/s. I've previously tried tiscali (who i was with before moving out here) and talk talk, both of which mentioned this TPON thing and gave up. (I've got 4 tiscali modems in my garage now if anyone wants one / two), if i'm going to get even slower service with SKY then i'll cancel that and accept the reduced offer being provided from BT. Any advice from anyone out there? :( |

| Iam in Wellside road and are signed up with PlusNet ( i think they are owned by BT but cheaper) not done a speed test for quite a while but never have any speed issues with general internet as i don't generally download a lot of stuff. The BT wholesale states an estmated line speed of 6mb. I was already with them for dial up and didn't have much problems switching to Broadband. |

I had a speed test recently as I have swapped my old Netgear router for the BT Home Hub. The sales person made claims of 20 Mb/s, but I remembered something about Kingswells being used as a trial area for a particular type of technology. The long and short is we can get a maximum of 8 Mb/s. Which I have to say is fine, you can watch iplayer via the wii or xbox 360 (OK it's not HD quality ), have numerous computers on and the phones ring without any problems. The only downside, seems to be limited choice of suppliers - it has to be BT. |

As far as I am aware the situation in Kingswells has not changed since the green cabinets were introduced in early 2007. This is still the fastest broadband service to Derbeth, Concraig, and Wellside areas of North Kingswells. The technology used involves the use of TPON (fibre optic) from the Westhill Exchange which is then converted to copper inside the green cabinets and then fed to the homes in these areas. This technology, trialled in Kingswells during 2006, is now known as Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and is being now used through the country as part of the BT 21CN upgrades. Subscribers which use this service should see download speeds in the range of 6Mbps. Residents who subscribe to bundled packages from Sky, TalkTalk, and AOL will generally have great difficulty receiving broadband within the North Kingswells housing developments as these companies install their own equipment within the Westhill Exchange as a money saving excercise i.e. they don't have to rent the lines from BT OpenReach. This is knows as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) which is not compatible with the FTTC equipment, meaning that the broadband transmission will be on copper all the way from Westhill resulting in very poor transfer rates. However, I would like to learn if there are any residents using broadband from these companies and what broadband speeds can be achieved. |
