So with the announcement that LanGreen are to terminate the wireless broadband service from 31 January 2006 the residents of Northern Kingswells are left with no options but await the news of the BT ADSL-over-Fibre trials. Wireless broadband is very prominent in today's internet world - airports and even some entire cities use this technology to provide an internet connection from anywhere within range. But yet not one but two companies commenced operations and failed miserably to provide a quality service within Kingswells. Forgetting the financial problems with high leased line costings etc, it does strike me as very unusual that these two companies both failed to construct an adequate infrastructure for the village. This is not new technology but tried and tested WiFi that is used extensively everywhere. In fact, LanGreen themselves own and operate abround 50 of these networks around the UK. So whats wrong here in Kingswells? LanGreen have complained of 'chronic WiFi frequency congestion'. Can this be true? If yes, then what/who is responsible for this WiFi frequency congesting that is plagueing the air around Kingswells.

"In a shock announcement, LanGreen Limited have announced that they plan to terminate the wireless broadband service as of 31st January." How is it a shock? they inherited a porr service and failed to improve it. Provide a reliable, cheap service and people will use it. provide a poor unreliable service then nobody will buy it!

Thinking of finally joining the rest of the world and moving over to broadband but I'm all confused. Can any one tell me if residents in the Kingswood Road area can get braodband over their phone line through BT?

Considering we got an announcement yesterday asking all to contact the enginneer for a re-connection then yes I would agree that today's announcement was a bit of a shocker.

Its well within range and not got the Fibre Optic problems that are faced by the folks in North Kingswells. Run the BT number checker at http://www.bt.com/broadband/ to see if your line is compatible.

If your telephone line is TPON fibre optic then you won't get broadband. If it is copper then run the BT checker as mensioned above.

Just an observation but ............ There are literally hundreds of wireless networks running in Kingswells, causing a huge congestion problem with anything travelling more than 2-300 metres or so. You can easily check this out for yourselves by taking a laptop with a wireless card and running a program called Netstumbler and driving or walking around the area with this running. This program will show all the networks it picks up in all the houses who have a wireless router installed there. This is the major problem in Kingswells. To get around this you would have to use a different frequency such as the unlicenced 5.8 ghz or licenced 3.4 ghz spectrums. This would obviously mean a change in equipment both with the APs and each household trying to connect to the AP. This of course is not cheap. I suspect that any of the other locations that Langreen or Village Internet have would be much smaller than Kingswells and so the amount of wireless traffic buzzing around is nowhere near the rates required to cause congestion at the level experienced in Kingswells. It might be worth while asking if BT can provide wireless for you in this way ? Regards, Interested Party.
