Hi, I am thinking of moving from my current broadband provider to BT. I would like to use BT Vision (on demand TV). BT recommend a 2Mb download connection speed. Does anyone get this in Kingswells? I only get 0.5Mb with Plusnet. I am hoping that as BT own all the kit around here they will be able to improve my download speed. The BT Vision box looks a good deal for a £30 one off payment. The box can record 80 hours of TV, with movies and football on demand. Here's hoping, Jim

Jim, I think you should be ok for 2Mb. Perhaps someone in the area can confirm this. Ian

Jim, With speeds of only 0.5Mbps I would guess one of two things: 1) that you have had your broadband for several years and are still on the copper overlay or 2) that the package you have purchases with PlusNet is capped at 0.5Mbps. Most of your neighbours in Derbeth Grange will be on the new remote DSLams (green cabinets on kingswells crescent) and getting speeds over 4Mbps. If you are still on the older broadband service from the copper lines then I would think that your new provider would get your line re-routed to transport through the new cabinets. Be sure to check this when you apply.

Ian/Graeme, Cheers for this info - 4Mb would be great. I have had broadband from before the green cabinets went in so it could well be I am still on a copper connection. I have been on to PlusNet for a while about my connection speed and they have done nothing so I started looking round. I'll post back when/if I get the BT Vison thing working. thanks again, Jim

Hi, I'm in Derbeth park, moved in in November last year. Have BB with BT, not impressed with the internet phone though, very poor sound quality and breaking up regularly. I've tried various speed check sites and am getting thoroughly confused. Some sites I'll get a little over 2Mb download speed and on others just over 4Mb but never more than 5Mb. Can you guys advise which speed checker site you are using and what the results are to be sure I'm comparing apples with apples? cheers Russell

Hi Russel I am in Concraig I havnt carried out a speed check recently because I have had no problems but I am not on a homehub. The last time I checked I was well over 5mg getting on for 6mg but that was between 0800 hrs and 1800hrs I am seldom on line after 1800hrs apart from the weekend. I have just checked tonight at 2030hrs on www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and it is wavering between 1.2 and 1.7. So there maybe a problem today. I'll try BT's own checker and let you know. Cheers John

Russel Just done a BT checker it is saying 1958KBPS and BBMAX is now saying 1789KBPS So there appears to be a slowdown tonight but it is rising as we speak. Hope this helps John

Hi I'm in Wellside and have Broadband with Plusnet, initially we were getting speeds up to 2.5mb, then dropped to about 1.2 but the past few days it hasn't gone above 800. We too are looking to switch - thinking of going with Sky. Anyone any recomendations?

Hi there, I am with BT,this morning on speedtest.bbmax.co.uk I am reading 6mb which is what I have been getting every time I have checked this month. Be careful with Sky,they have LLU at the exchange but we who receive BB via green cabinets cannot take advantage of that. If anyone on green cabinets who is on Sky Connect can respond it would be useful.

Before you go jumping to a new ISP... we are in Concraig, have "up to 8Mbps" connection with PlusNet. Performance has been consistently between 4-6Mbps, until the other week when it slowed right down to <500kbps. This continued for a few days, so I used PlusNet's online usage analysis tool to see that our usage had gone up from ~4Gb/month to over 10GB in a couple of weeks. It turns out that this extra usage was due to my other-half using BBC iPlayer to download loads of programmes. As we were over our free usage limit they had throttled our connection until the end of the month. The only gripe I have with this is that they didn't e-mail us to warn us that this had been done. All I would say is check your usage, and if it is very high then check your T&Cs with your ISP. Nobody gives you "unlimited" usage unless you pay £££s for it.

Just to clarify - the speeds of 4-6Mbps were generally during the daytime. Performance in the evening can be reduced due to the greater number of users online - remember your broadband has a contention ratio of at least 20:1 (probably higher) that means 20 people sharing the same bandwidth. If they are all online streaming video at the same time then you WILL see a drop in performance.

Thanks, I have just checked my usage and for the past 3 months it has been well below my allowance - speed checker has put my download speed at 436kbps and upload speed at 480kbps. Has been like this for over a week now and plusnet seem quite pricey for the service they offer.
