Having decided to get broadband after waiting for BT to catch up with the rest of Blighty. Who would people recommend? BT / PlusNet / Orange have all been mentioned. Any help / hindrances for each would be helpful, plus quick and easy tips to avoid hassle when ordering and setting up.

BT have apparently connected hundreds, and if the connection goes well you are ok. However, if there are any faults - and I would assume if future faults develop for folks currently all ok, then forget it with BT - their systems are so automated with NO MANUAL work arounds. This means you get stuck at the first hurdle with someone saying you are not connected. It appears totally impossible for them to go further to help you - that's the issue you see from folks choosing BT in 'problems'. You are probably thinking it must be possible to escalate - it isnt unless you have contacts !! Apparently there are many happy customers out there from BT - and why wouldnt they be if its connected on the day it should be. Same with other ISP's. I dont know how other ISP's are managing faults - are they any better ? Maybe the noise against BT is just because they have a higher percentage of connections so therefore higher chance of seeing faults - it appears only 4 to 5 of us have had issues but not everyone writes into the forum. What would I do again ? Pick the minimum contract with anyone you can find and get established and keep your fingers crossed they successfully connect you.

Plusnet is now owned by BT but are apparently keeping their own identity. After a couple of glitches I'm now happily connected through them (in Wellside Circle). Top speed appears to be around 5.3Mbs although it varies depending on the time of day. They have an excellent Online Help & Support system. They also have different packages depending on whether your'e a heavy user on just do some surfing & e-mail. I'm the latter so pay £14.99 for (almost) unlimited usage (main restriction is a monthly usage of 4gb during peak times (4pm to midnight)). Brian

In Wellside Place. Ordered through Orange two weeks ago. Livebox etc arrived on Tuesday. Installed and got wired broadband working nae bother at all. Speeds of 1.5 mb last i checked, but that should go up i hope. It should be 6 - 8 mb but we'll see. Had slight hitch getting it to work wirelessly however, but we managed to figure out the problem ourselves and it now works too. And the Wii is connected also! We were going to go with BT initially, but found the corresponding Orange package more attractive, so decided against BT. Luckily, since they seem to have unhelpful help lines. But peronally can't comment on that as never had to use them.

Welside Place also. ISP is Demon. Speed at peak times is around 3 - 3.5 meg but for some reason last night around 7pm it was over 6 meg. Max I have seen it 7.2 meg

Update to my post above. Speed was clocked at over 6 mb today. So can say *touch wood* that our broadband installation via Orange has gone pretty well!

Try Demon , I tried tiscali who were not interested , then toucan who argued that it is impossible to supply BB over TPON , when I asked to speak to an expert she told me she had 2 weeks training and knew what she was talking about , so I said goodbye, noticed a recommendation for Demon on the forum ,and just as was said if you phone the provisions team and explain our situation no problems , got connected today as promised dont know the exact speed but a 15Mb file downloaded in less than a minute ,good enough for me.

George Glad to hear it all went OK with Demon. I was a bit reluctant to recommend them incase I had just "got lucky" but they handled my order very professionally. I sometimes think we are all too peed orientated. As long as it does what I want it to do when I want it too I will be quite happy.

We got Orange BB - unlimited, wireless its only £5 a month if you've a £30+ mobile contract with them, and I'd recommend them. Took exactly 7 days from first call to getting online. Speeds high but variable between 5 - 6.5Mbps, but after suffering dial-up for so long I'd have been happy with 0.5. I only seem to get 2.5Mbps via wireless, but again, its good enough for me. Slight problem with software to set up the livebox - uninstalling adobe flash player sorts it out.
