I am currently getting speeds of around 4 meg. I note from some of the posts that some are getting over 7 meg. My modem is plugged into an extension socket which was in the house when I moved in and I am not using a wireless router so I would have to disconnect and move the computer to use the master socket. Just wondering if those of you who are getting these faster speeds are connected wirelessly via the master socket or whether there is any way my computer or modem might be restricting my speed?

When I was connected to the master socket via the ethernet cable I was getting just over 4mb. My computer is now upstairs working wirelessly and it has now dropped to 2.5mb.

Maddie Sorry to disappoint, but I think you'll find that the 8096/448 is the sync speed reported by your modem, no the actual data rate (having said that, I'm sure your'e delighted at the improvement over your dial-up!) To get a true indication of your data transfer rate try the speed checker at http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk Mine is still maxing out consistently at 2Mbps, and PlusNet say they won't change my profile until they get the automated line reports from the exchange showing that the line supports higher speeds. I'm getting signal/noise of 19dB so would expect much higher than 2 meg. However the intial 10-day training period is up and no change yet, despite having reset my modem a couple of times a day as suggested to aid the process. Looks like I have to keep banging on at them to get the 6Mbps that others are enjoying.

Hi fatlad You're right. Just now getting 6.8 down so not complaining with the speed. Tried a couple of downloads and they were down in a flash.

I am getting 4 meg now on a regular basis. (Wireless connection to laptop if that makes any difference. I would assume connecting via ethernet cable would give me a higher speed.)

hblindell Have you not heard anything back yet. Did you send off your email. I got lots of phone calls a couple of days after I emailed. I still have a modem and BT ISP problem, but my connection works fine so am not too bothered about there being a fault or how long it takes to fix now. I bet you are not set up on the "raz". If you have ADSL light, connect using ethernet or USB and phone india tech help for how to test it. Worth a try after all this time and mention the raz and that you might not be set up on it properly although you have broadband connection. Good luck

Maddie I'm intrigued. Are you talking about a RAS?

Hi Maddie, I have finally emailed all those people. I had been speaking to complaints, then escalated to higher complaints and was currently with 'jeopardy management' (great name). I assume by RAS you mean the PPP authentication. Unfortunately I am not getting that far. My router is not getting any ATM loopback cells so doesn't reach the PPP stage. Technical support told me there was a problem with my phone line which was why my phone and broadband weren't working, until I pointed out that I was speaking to him the phone. He was obviously running through a script which is very annoying. Trying to get me to ping the router and the old 'reboot the laptop' thing. Grrrrrrr

hblindell I too am in Wellside Wynd and have been consistently getting 7.6Mbps since connection three weeks ago. Others in the Wynd are also now up and running. It seems that part of the problem lies with the fact that each application has to be manually connected at the street cabinets. This is very labour intensive but hence the BT vans around the streets. Incidentally I am with Eclipse and no problems.

loggs Had to prod PlusNet to change my profile to allow 8 Meg. Seems like the automated reporting system wasn't doing what it should. I just pointed them to my signal/noise stats and the fact that I'm only 200 yards form the "exchange" - anyhow, once they had changed my profile I immediately could get 5.8Meg max which is about what I'd expect. PlusNet customer service have been good so far. Like the usage meter showing peak/off-peak usage and traffic breakdown. Built in firewall may be useful to some, though at least you can disable using the online configuration tool.
