| Although I am delighted that some residents have been connected, I suspect the majority are still struggling.
Could the people who are connected please let us know which ISP they are using so that the rest of us can make an informed choice.
Reading the posts it appears that BT, Orange and Eclipse are working ?
I would like to know if anybody has tried or is connected by SKY Broadband ??

| Using BT. Ordered online as normal. Went through fine. Speeds between 4 & 6mb. Slight problem with the hub. Had to change the wireless channel as I was getting interference. Working fine now. Only need the Playstation 3 to make things complete. Roll on March 23rd. |

| Sky are one of these ISPs that install their own equipment at the exchange. A process known as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). TalkTalk do a similar thing. Last I checked is that Sky haven't as yet installed their equipment at the Westhill exchange but plan to do so Summer 2007.
This means that you can't subscribe to their Mid, Max, or Connect packages until Summer 2007. However they will accept an order for their Sky Base package which is free to all Sky customers. However this package is capped at 2Mb download speed and only provides 2Gb monthly usage allowance. This is fairly restrictive limits which is why it's free i.e. you get what you pay for.
Additionally I still have doubts about the providers who perform LLU and how this can operate with the new Openreach street cabinets. I am unsure whether the two systems are compatible and it just might be that customers can't experience the faster speeds that the new street cabinets provide. Did anyone sign up for a TalkTalk package in the Wellside, Concraig, or Derbeth areas. Care to share what speeds you are getting?

| Don't even mention the name Talk Talk, I finally gave them the elbow last night and in the meantime I have gone back to BT for my line rental.
Can anybody explain if the LLU has anything to do with our new street cabinets. I didn't think it did ? I thought our Broadband was coming from the cabinets as opposed to the exchange which is in Westhill. Can anybody with a bit more knowledge explain.
I have been making enquiry with Sky, and even at 2Mb I would be delighted. It beats dial up at 56kps. How is 2Gb monthly usgage calculated ? I only need Braodband for sending e-mails and browising the Net. |

Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is where an external operator installs their own equipment in a BT Telehone Exchange. Customers are then connected directly to the LLU equipment effectively by-passing the installed BT Equipment. This is used commonly when operators offer heavily discounted call packages e.g. TalkTalk as the cost can save money by installing their own equipment instead of renting lines from BT.
Broadband connectivity uses a piece of equipment called a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). This provide a broadband service to a subscriber and connects them to the high-speed internet backbone. Traditionally the DSLAM is located at the telephone exchange and connected to the subscriber using the same copper lines used for voice communications. This architecture relies on the subscriber having copper lines running from his premises right back to the telephone exchange.
This is not the case for North Kingswells who use fibre optic lines (TPON) to provide a telecommunication service. Actually the TPON lines run from the exchange at Westhill to the street cabinets. They as then converted to copper lines which run the last 100 metre or so to the subscriber premises.
The new street cabinets installed by BT Openreach contain their own DSLAM. This is called a Remote DSLAM as it is not contained at the exchange. The connectivity here is that the fibre optic connects the high-speed backbone at the exchange to the street cabinet. And then at this level the DSLAM is applied to convert the backbone to the subscriber copper lines thus providing a DSL service.
Now when a Talk Talk appear on the scene they install their own equipment at the exchange including their own DSLAM. For this to work it means that a subscriber still needs a copper line from the exchange to their premises. This is not the case in North Kingswells (there are no copper lines running from the exchange) which makes me wonder whether TalkTalk can provide an unbundled broadband service to the residents of North Kingswells, or if they can it would be at the slower 512Kbps speeds. I would like to hear from TalkTalk customers to see if they can confirm.
2Gb monthly capacities are computed at by measuring the amount of data that you download. This doesnt only apply to file or music downloads, but to every piece of information that you access when connected to the internet. Every time you open a web page you are downloading the page details to your computer including all the images on the page. Each email you receive is a specific number of bytes which are added to your monthly capacity. Some of the ISPs will give you a measure of how far 2Gb will go on their web sites.
I hope that the above lengthy ramble is of some use to you.

| I signed up with Demon - ordered over the phone on 22/1/07. A few hours later they sent me an e-mail telling me I had an incompatible product on my line.
I replied telling them about the manual order requirement and bingo my connection went live on 27/01/07. |

| Contacted Talk Talk today after modem failed to arrive. Was advised that it should arrive 1 week after activation date, is this the case with other Talk Talk users or have I been fobbed off? |

| Just been "Upgraded" with TalkTalk onto they're own DSLAM, now only getting 256k when I was on 512k. Is anybody else getting a faster connection with TalkTalk? They're Broadband Support people don't seem to have a clue what they're talking about and nobidy's heard of the remote DSLAM's in the cabinets, they told me it's probably my Anti-Virus software!

| Andy,
I am connected to one of the new cabinets. I got connected around the middle of February and since then, there have been no problems and compared to dial up, have now got super fast BB.
No problem with using me as an example, hopefully you get it sorted soon.
If you need any further details, give me a shout.
Regards

| Thanks Andy,
I'm back up and running now but only at 350k so still not happy as I was faster before they "Upgraded" me, I may well need you're name and details to get something comparable to your connection from them but I'll get back to you if I do. Again, thanks for the info.

| We went with plusnet after reading about someone else in Kingswells who had gone with them. Been connected for about 1 month and have average speeds of about 7.2. Not had any problems with them so far only downide is we didn't spend the additional £67.99 for the wireless modem. |
