Appears to be much confusion in the forums about British Telecom and why even they don't seem to be aware of the new broadband system in Kingswells. Thought I would take the opportunity to post about the current structure of what we all know as British Telecom. As a result of some re-regulation of the telecommunications within the UK, British Telecom separated into several distinct business groups. These groups operate pretty much as independent companies which, as a result, means that one BT group doesn't know much about what the other is doing. From experience I have found that it helps dealings in telecommunications when you know the different BT groups and what their respective responsibilities are, insteading of simply refering to BT as a whole. The main groups within British Telecom are: Openreach - the group who control the telecommunications links between your home and the telephone exchanges. These are the group who employ the engineers who visit your home to trace faults and more importantly the group who have installed the new street cabinets containing the Remote DSLAMs. Mr. Bob Downes who sent us the broadband letter in December is the Regional Director of Openreach in Scotland. BT Wholesale - This group operates and manages the national telecommunication network including all the telephone exchanges. BT Wholesale are an important piece of the broadband puzzle as their network is used by all the ISPs with the connection between you and the ISP's server infrastructure. Whenever an order is placed for broadband with any ISP it is BT Wholesale who perform the magic to make your broadband connection work by activating ADSL on your telephone line. BT Retail - the retail arm of the BT group who sell the telephone and broadband packages. This is the group that is essentially the BT ISP and sell the Total Broadband packages. So unless you choose BT as your ISP you will not have any dealing with this part of the BT Group. Hope that this helps clear up the mystery of BT and assists with the broadband order process. Gec.
