My broadband is working!!!! FINALLLY! I ordered through BT on the 18that about 8:02 am. I never bothered to mention anything about a manual order process. Figured they wouldn't understand anyways... Activation date was supposed to be the 25th but as with many others this didn't happen. I called this morning and they told me it would be up and running for sure by the 29th. Came home after work plugged it in and the Broadband light came on followed shortly by the Internet light. Unbelieveable! I'm on Wellside Gardens.

Congratulations Rob! The first success story so far. Would be grateful if you could perform a speed test and tell all the speeds that you are getting with the new system. Try this speed test at: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk Gec.

It's only about 485k down and 245k up. Hopefully there's some truth to what they say about taking up to 10 days for the speed to settle. I guess it's a lot better than 36k down and 20k up from dial up!! Could be that I'm quite a distance away from the little green cabinet? Hopefully not...

Hooray thats great news. Light at the end of the tunnel. Bit concerned about the speed but to be honest I would be happy with that. Congratulations Rob, lets hope they'll all start flooding in now.....

Yes thats great news. I wouldnt have thought anybody was too far away from the green cabinet to get a high speed connection but at least it is not 56k!!! My activation is Monday 29th but as yet no modem has turned up. I will keep you posted.

I have also managed to get up and running this morning, with Orange Broadband. Currently getting about 2mb connection which although not the 6.5mb is still great after all the time on dial up. Hopefully the improvement to better speed will come after the 10 days or so that they say and BT has completed their work in the cabinets. Hope that the rest of you are just as lucky at getting connected. Richard

Rob1/Rich, Everyone in Wellside should be within 500m of the green cabinets which means that you should be getting speeds far great than you are. The initial max speed is defined within 75 minutes of first synchronising with your new ADSL service. The following 10 days are used to monitor the connection and then apply the Maximum Stable Rate to your profile. I presume that both of you have subscribed to packages that permit the faster speeds? Some ISPs will sell basic packages which are capped at 2Meg download so you will never get the 6+ Meg speeds. Rob1: your speeds are pretty disappointing and are more applicable for a 512Kbps package. So unless you have subscribed to a 512Kbps package then I would contact your ISP to check it out. Are you using a USB modem or a router? Check the diagnostics screen to look for a couple of numbers which will be labelled Signal/Noise Ratio and Line Attenuation. This will identify your line quality and distance from the street cabinet. Perhaps you could post these here to give us some indication of your ADSL synch. Gec.

Graeme I can't actually find anything in the modem setup page (as administrator) for Signal/Noise ratio or Line Attenuation. So, I called BT to check on the speed and they said I haven't been activated yet. What a joke! After spending about 15 minutes on the phone to India I found out that what happened is that they have hooked me up as a pay as you go customer temporarily until the 29th even though I never ordered this. Now wasn't that nice of them... hopefully things speed up come Monday!!

My activation date is Friday 2 February, when I tried to log on to BT dial up yesterday I had a message saying"you are now a broadband customer if you want to use dial up please download pay as you go software,I have done that so I am back on line again. I tried to find out if I was to be charged for "pay as you go" but India didn't understand,I have paid for BT Anytime from 9 January until 9 February so I hope I'm not charged,I'll try to talk to UK about it tomorrow.

We're active from around 1pm today with Orange Broadband. Connection speed is 576k. We are paying for 2meg. Hopefully it will speed up!

We are in Wellside too and our BT broadband started working on Friday - they initially said it would be up and running on Thursday 25th by 8pm - but when I came home from work on Friday all the lights were on! Speed is 8,096 Kbps down and 448 Kbps up so slightly quicker than the old dial up! Good luck to the rest of you.

Those of you getting 4 meg: who are you with and how did you apply, ie phone or online? Results seem pretty random so far. We aim to try shortly but are still undecided who to go with.

Waylander, I ordered on the 18th using the Orange web site. It showed that I could get up to 6.5 meg on its check. This was a fully automated order and it went through with no problems at all. I went live on Saturday with no major issue, but only around 2 meg. However, when I checked the speed this morning I was getting approx 6.2 meg, this speed varies a bit but I am now getting consistently over 4 meg. The package I ordered was the wireless and talk as I make a lot of international calls due to my work and they are free to land lines with this package. Also it is cheaper than BT unlimited. Richard
