| Has anyone any thoughts on the the various Broadband packages that are out there and any ones that standout from the rest. I was thinking about combined packages with telephone calls? |

| hi loggs,
According to the samknows web site, the only available call/broadband package available to kingswells users is TalkTalk from Carphone Warehouse. They have a LLU presence in the Westhill exchange meaning they have installed their own equipment at the exchange to support their customers.
At this point it is unknown, though in my opinion unlikely, whether TalkTalk will be able to offer a service using the new street cabinets that OpenReach have installed. Which means that any broadband service from TalkTalk may only be provided using the existing ADSL service from the Westhill exchange which is limited to 512Kbps and not available to must of North Kingswells.
Before entering into any contract with TalkTalk I would advise that you receive clarification on their ability to provide a service using the new street cabinets.

| Thanks Graeme
Iam not limiting myself to call/broadband packages, but just considering the options. I see Sky also offer some low cost broadband connections for existing customers.
How do you know which companies can use the new street cabinets? I guess i will have to wait until after the 18th and try the various companies availability checkers?
Also do you know anywhere that gives good advice on wireless set ups etcc as this is something iam interested in once we finally get broadband?

| I frequent the thinkbroadband.com site (formerly adslguide) and this has a great list of ISPs - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isps.html. All of the ISPs in the list should be able to provide a service using the new street cabinets. They also offer a ISP Search function at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/search/package/basic.html which may be of help in your search for ISPs.
The exception to this are the companies who install their own telephone hardware (LLUs) in the exchanges. These companies, such as TalkTalk or Sky, may still provide a 'free' service without siging up for a Call/Broadband package. However these 'free' packages are typically limited to 512Kbps and extreme download caps.
If you are interested in wireless solutions then check carefully through the list of ISPs as many now offer a free wireless router upon subscrption which will offer an immediate cost saving to yourself.
DigitalHome magazine have an excellent introduction guide to wireless internet at http://www.digitalhomemag.com/wireless/default.shtml

| The exchange has been enabled since 2003 I think. Our situation in North Kingswells
is to do with the cabling from the exchange to street cabinets and the distance.
Unless the availability information changes on many isp websites by 18 January, there
are going be some strange telephone conversations with isp's.
When I call my isp BT Broadband on or after 18th,if I struggle then I can imagine what it will be like with the others,I think patience will be the order of the day!! |

| As mentioned in the BT press release, the order process for North Kingswells residents will be manual-based so it's unlikely that any of the ADSL Checkers will be updated by the 18th. This means that many of the ISP website automated ordering will not operate and give results exactly the same as if you were to order today. So this will mean a phone call to the ISP of your choice on or after the magical 18th.
All ISPs will be briefed on the Kingswells situation and the process of accepting manual orders, but how much of this will be filtered down to the call centre staff is anyone's guess. I'm in total agreement with johnny on this one...even with the availability of broadband its not going to be plain sailing to get an order accepted.
