| BT Wholesale have today written to ISPs telling them broadband will be available in the street cabinet area at Kingswells from 18 January. Openreach will be writing to all householders in the area served by the cabinets giving them the same information - the letters are being put into envelopes tonight and will be out tomorrow. People should NOT order broadband before the 18th - the orders will be rejected.
There will be a manual order taking process in place which may result in some delay in some of the orders being processed.
BT are sorry for the delay in bringing this service into operation but we had to ensure that all technical and regulatory issues were resolved before we could notify the ISPs

| This is good news! I think I'll wait 'til about March though when everything has settled down.
Does anyone know what speed we're likely to be able to get?

| Hi resident,
The new street cabinets will support 8Mbps speeds - though the usual laws of physics will apply - the further homes are from the cabinet in terms of line length the lower the speed.
Its my best guess that most folk will be in the 4Mbps+ speed range.

| Hi Graeme
Thanks for the reply.
4 Meg would be pretty good but up to 8 Meg would be fantastic.
Not just for the speed, but for the bandwith that would allow. Currently my house has a computer, a Nintendo DS, an XBox 360 and a Nintendo Wii all waiting for broadband with the possibility of another laptop later. 8 Meg would allow everything to run quite nicely.

| Bob,
I was one of the lucky ones in wellside who had a copper overlay for the TPON 2 years ago giving a connection at 512kb. I have been upgraded to 8meg maxADSL for about 3 months, recently this produced connection speeds of around 2 meg at quiet times but down to 100kb during the busy period with my previous ISP, this week it has increased to approximately 6 meg since I changed my ISP and this is most of the time, the upload speed remains constant at 384kb. I would expect you and others to be around the same level.

| Hi John
6 Meg sounds great!. To be honest 1 meg would seem fantastic after all these years of dial-up but if we can get 6 meg I will be well pleased.

| hi dogbiscuit,
Find it interesting that changing ISPs would make such a radical difference in your speeds. Perhaps you changed ADSL hardware at the same time? Did you receive new ADSL hardware (i.e. modem, router) when you changed ISPs?
Older ADSL modems and routers from 2+ years ago are unlikely to scale above 2Mbps which was the norm at that time.

| Graeme,
I am using a wireless router I bought several months ago so no change in hardware. The previous ISP was Virgin and having joined forces with NTL in the summer it appears that they were having problems with MaxADSL, I took numerous speed readings and submitted them but to no avail. I looked at websites and found that there were large numbers of people in the Uk experiencing similar speed problems with Virgin. As a result of this I decided to migrate, I am as surprised as anyone that i am getting these sort of speeds but it is a fact. My latest tests are showing speeds approaching 7 meg which is more than acceptable on a MaxADSL connection.

| Just wondering if anyone has broadband through Talk Talk. I signed up around 3 months ago and now patiently waiting for the go live date.
Any replies, positive or negative would be appreciated. |
