I'm sorry to say it, but Kingswells is a really boring place to live. There is next to no community spirit, the houses are bland and characterless, there's nothing to do here, no shopping centre or anything. There are too many people that are still under the impression that we live in a village. The truth is that we live in a large housing estate near Hazlehead and we all require shops etc.

people make it boring!!! the amount of people (including neighbors) who don't even bother to repy back after you've said hello to them, makes it a sad place to stay. If house prices weren't through the roof, then i'd move in a second! I hate Kingswells!!! it's overpriced, broadbandless, never ending issues with factors, speeding and people who are always complaining about green belt/WPR issues. When I first moved here it was a not bad place, close enough to town for shopping and far enough away to have it's own identity. Of course it's identity now is boring!!!! The one sided community council, who only ever push issues they want to (Look at the website polls for various things, with the majority..the CC pushed what the minority wanted)
The one sided community council, who only ever push issues they want to (Look at the website polls for various things, with the majority..the CC pushed what the minority wanted)
I would be interested to here more of your views on this. Please expand with specific examples. What polls are you talking about? The Community Council is generally undermanned and over worked. We have two positions free at the moment. Any of the 3000 Kingswells residents can join. If you are interested in one topic (developing community spirit), and don't want to get involved with the overall issues then assistance from any number of residents is always welcome, but seldom offered. Don't sit back complaining. Standup and do something about it. Too busy? We are all busy!! There is a meeting on Monday 10th October at the Community Centre at 8pm. Please come along and speak to the Community Council.

Kingswells is a lovely place. Just get off your backside & do something about it. Instead of wasting your time surfing the net, with your trousers down & viewing the delights of Spank-Yer-Monkey.com

I have to agree that Kingswells is a lovely place to stay - but the folk are not very friendly - most folk don't even say hello if you're out walking the dog or pushing the pram. In my opinion, most folk in Kingswells are at work all day and don't want to be involved in things in the evenings. I would however welcome more things going on (eg. aerobics) in the evenings either at Webster Park or at the Community Centre - most things seem to be on during the day which is ok if you don't work but means that you need to trek into town or somewhere else if you want to do anything. A supermarket would also be very welcome - why don't Tesco build at Kingswells instead of Westhill - they already have Somerfield/Safeway/Morrisons or whatever its called! And why can't we get a pub/restaurant over at the Wellside/Derbeth end of Kingswells - bit of a trek to the Four Mile from there and thats without a drink!

I agree with the sentiments of the last posting,I moved into Concraig gardens in 1997 when Concraig park,Wellside and Derbeth were still fields,we had no bus service and had to walk to Community centre to get the bus, when we got there there was a small newsagents/general store, hairdresser and vet. 8 years on we have a convenience store and if you think the Co-op is bad ,Alldays before it was worse. I sometimes wonder if the large retail outfits know about Kingswells or maybe they think we are a part of Westhill. yes we need a supermarket and a pub resturaunt and lots of other amenities, but while we have bus shelters with no sides its unlikely we'll get anything like the other civilized things.

There are aerobics classes in the evening!! They have been on the go for a number of years and are excellent - no I'm not the instructor!! The village hall has three classes per week, they are widely advertised in the community centre and the Kingswells news. Perhaps there are other things on offer the author has yet to discover!!

Lets not be too critical of KCC, they give up their time and put in the effort for the benefit of all in Kingswells, and like someone else has pointed out - anyone can become a member if they feel they can do a better job. Also, I moved to Kingswells because it is quiet (boring to some) and for the moment surrounded by countryside, lets hope it stays that way. If you want loads of shops and pubs, houses are usually cheaper in Bridge of Don / Northfield / Mastrick, so why not move there? I would also disagree that people in kingswells are not friendly, however community spirit could be better improved if there were more community events that people would like to attend.

I have lived in several Aberdeen suburbs - Cove, Portlethen and Kingswells. Kingswells is a better environment, has much less of a teeny yob problem and has a good primary school. But in common with all other new estates, especially in and around Aberdeen there is a big mix of local Aberdonians, incomers from all over the UK and international 'oilys' it is difficult to form a community (what ever that means) from such a mix and I think this leads to a lack of consideration for neighbours as people feel isolated even though our houses are all packed in together. Perhaps if we had our own secondary school that would help.

Moved to kingswells in 1997 and that summer the there was ceilidh? dance at the community centre. Went along with all our new neighbours and met other people that night that we are still friends with to this day. How about another one to get the community spirit together?

I've lived in Wellside since 2002 now and whilst I think its a 'nice area' I agree that it is boring and has no community spirit. I don't even know my neighbours names, everyone keeps themselves to themselves (not a bad thing), except for the cliquey spoilt housewives who live in the bigger houses cos they married an 'oily' and somehow believe they've accomplished something in life by getting overweight, buying labradors and refusing to say hello when you greet them in the street cos they think they're better than you. Having said that I'd say that the Wellside end is inviting any old person in now. I currently have neighbours who leave their dogs in the garden to all hours barking away, disturbing my children asleep and who have the nerve to bang on the walls when I drop a plate in the kitchen. As for the broadband debate, this is my first chance to air my own frustrations. I run an internet business from home and find it so painful seeing everyone complain about the lack of broadband. My business depends on it and as a result of waiting over 2 years, I now have decided to go back to full-time employment as it is one of the reasons it just ain't feasible now. I'm sure people can manage on dial-up, hell I have, just and no more. What do most want it for anyway? Downloading MP3's? Let's get some interesting things going on in Kingswells. Some of us are working class intelligent people, not all fat housewives who need to do aerobics so their hubbies don't go off with younger women. :-)

Regarding broadband - BT will start trials in Kingswells in December to provide broadband over fibre cable (most of Wellside, Concraig and Derbeth). If the trials are successful then these areas will have access to 2Mb broadband.

Susan I feel I have to reply to your message. I also live in the Wellside development and for all you know I could be your next door neighbour with the yapping dogs!! Unfortunately for me I'm not married to an "oily" and am not a bored housewife looking for aerobics so my husband doesn't run off with a young bit of stuff. I'm actually under 30 (years that is and not stone!!)with a very good job of my own and would be looking to do aerobics as a bit of fun and to meet other like minded people, if there are any that is!

Hello Ms Guest Thanks for your reply. Firstly, I don't really care if you are my neighbour, I don't pretend to approve of their presence. I never said that kingswells was entirely made up of oilys and housewives. What I was trying to convey was that whilst a lot of the Kingswells is made up of professional families etc who are too busy to care what the neighbours do (c'est moi), there are also a lot of housewives here who have nothing better to do than compare their lawns, withering their lives away worrying about who has the biggest 4 x 4. I have a slight bee in my bonnet because whilst I live in a humble 3 bed semi I work my sweet butt off for it unlike the other half who look down on me and don't say hello just cos they have one bathroom more than me. There is absolutely nothing stimulating or challenging to do in this area. Fair enough if aerobics is your thing but from experience I have noted that it is indeed mostly made up of housewives etc and they are mostly run during the days.

Hello MS 'Bee in Bonnet', We live in a street of 'big' houses and I think most of the women work to help with the big mortgages and huge council tax bills that we have to pay. I certainly wouldn't look down on you because of where you live, personality is much more important than your bank balance. When these 'desperate housewives' ignore you just think that big house = big mortgage, cars are easy to get on contract hire and most people have large credit card bills, then you can be happier with what you have acheived by your own hard work. From the postings on this board it would seem that peoples view of Kingswells is largely affected by the quality of their neighbours, good neighbours = happy, bad neighbours = not happy. Despite our nice house, garden and school my neighbours fall into the not particularly good category so I'm not very happy ! Even though in general I think Kingswells is OK.

I think Kingswells is lovely place to stay. Lots of nice walks to go on and its like living in the country but close enough to town which is good. My neighbours are all really friendly and most of them would always help you out in an emergency. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else, although the bigger houses are quite expensive, but I think its because Kingswells is such a nice play to stay.

Well, well, well what a miserable bunch we all seem to be. Do what I did. We didn’t know anyone in Kingswells. So the first year we moved in we had a big Halloween party and invite all your neighbours, the party was a great success and many of us have become great friends, so even if you don’t know your neighbours just send an invite to No ?? from No !! . Neighbours will talk to you straight away. They need an ice-breaker. Now everyone in our road knows each other and although a lot of us work, we wave, say hello and are generally very neighbourly. Even the men play golf together once a year. Don’t expect other to make the first move, some people are genuinely shy, until you give them a friendly smile and say hello. Kingswells is a lot better than many places in Aberdeen and other places in the UK. I don’t think anyone has every ignored me when I’ve said ‘Hi’. Be possitive and smile about life.
