Who is the chap that cycles from Kingswells - down the Lang Stracht in the morning? He is all in black with a dark blue helmet. He cycles with such speed he obviously cannot see the purpose built cycle path. Not only that, he tries to cycle down the broken white line in the centre of the road. Death wish or what? Can someone ask him if he wants to live past the end of this week? This morning my kids and I watched in horror as he was nearly knocked off his bike twice and then he had to brake hard to avoid flying into the back of a truck. I commend his healthy mode of transport, but what’s the point if you’re not going to live past the end of the week? Have a care.

Probably the same guy at 6am on a winters morning in the dark, snowing heavily in uncleared roads.... And most likely the guy who choses not to use the westhill-kingswells cycle lane, but uses the main road instead. could he have been the guy who jumped the red light with a personal stereo on and failed to hear a police car behind him (evening express all week)?

As a cyclist who regularly travels from kingswells into the centre along the lang Stracht, I also cycle on the road from the traffic light junction where the park and ride buses turn off. Why? because the council in their wisdom, deceided to give right of way to drivers coming out of private drives instead of the cyclist. Heard that the council are looking at paying people to cycle and leave the car behind, knowing what Aberdonians are like, the roads will be full of happy cyclists!!:msn_wink:

As a cyclist who regularly travels from Kingswells along the Lang Stracht, I (and several others) have no problem using the cycle path. I have yet to encounter anyone actually coming out of either of the 2 private driveways. It would be good to see a lot more cyclists around Aberdeen. Having cycled in Edinburgh for 15 years I felt quite safe on the roads, as most drivers were used to having bikes around them and would make allowances where necessary. Doesn't seem to me that this culture has caught on in Aberdeen yet.

The council are trying to encourage cycling and have made a descent effort in providing suitable lanes and markings. The problem is they put an uneven surface on top of a perfectly smooth surface in the lanes on the Lang Stracht, making it an absolute pain to cycle on. Unlike the previous posting, i have encountered a car leaving one of the driveways and it was a close thing. Worked in Holland for a while and the bike is King over there, the council could have learnt a thing or two if they were serious about the issue. I cycle most days to the city centre and agree that the majority of drivers could do with spending a few hours on a bike and see how they like being cut up and forced into the kerb. One day we will both share the roads in harmony!!

Based on my observation of cyclists as a group, the majority wouldn't know the highway code if they saw it. Apparently red lights, one way streets and any normal road priority/give way doesn't apply to those with pedals. Having both driven and cycled in more than one city across the UK, Aberdeen is far worse than most. When crossing Union Street you are pretty much taking your own life into your hands. And the number of expensive German cars in Aberdeen where the owners haven't stumped up the cash for the indicators so they can get the brushed aluminium trim instead? To move topic, have you noticed how many of the people doing 40+ through Kingswells are mothers with children in the car? Obviously it's OK for them, as they're not boy racers and their kids can't be playing on the street if they're in the car at that time...

I agree 'Guest'. Speeding in Kingswells is very democratic ie done by all ages, classes and both sexes. Drivers obeying the 30mph maximum are the odd ones out ! Perhaps the busses should try to set an example.
