Loggs, I'm frequently annoyed by helicopters, sometimes they seen to fly in a circular holding pattern over Kingwells before heading to the airport. Are there any helicopter pilots or air traffic controllers out there that can explain why ?

Loggs and Saxon Have to say that I didn't hear any helicopter noise at all. Sometimes am a bit disturbed by aeroplane flights during the night since the curfew at Aberdeen airport was lifted. Not recently though.

Helicopter - you've got me started. Helicopters are for ever doing their circle of 8 over Kingswells. So, much so I phoned up the airport and stood outside with my phone and demonstrated over the phone just how noisy and repetative this constant flight is. I then asked why this is necessary. I was told this is a practice exercise and they have to train. I politly asked them to train out over the sea, not Kingswells. With in a few minutes of the phone call the helicopter moved out over to the sea. The only way they will stop this training activity is if they receive complaints and as only two people have complianed it is assumed by the airport there is no problem with the residents of Kingswells, having their afternoon and evenings schattered by the whirl of helicopter blades. My other favourite complaint is low flying aircraft. They are not supposed to fly any lower than 1000m above our houses. If you can read the writing on the side of the plane it is likely they are below the 1000m thresh-hold and breaking avaiation regulations. Again you have to complian to the airport, you must ask to receive a letter from the airport, acknowledging your coplaint and then it is a recorded compliant. When the aircraft break the rules - we have to complain. If you want to take it further a plane flying below 1000m can be reported to the police - I'm told, don't take that as gospel. Make sure you ask for a letter to confirm your complaint has been acknowledged. Apart from that blip Kingswells is a good place to live.

Agreed Claire, The North Sea is only one minutes flying time away, why can't they practice there ? Have you tried getting our Counsellor to sort the airport out about this ?

Claire, Do you have a note of the number that you called to complain as I called the Airport number out of the phone book and was fobbed off to broomfield house and they told me it had nothing to do with them ("it is probably a RAF Search and Rescue!!") however maybe a coincidence but it stopped a few minutes later! I am going to e-mail our councillor to formally raise this matter.

I heard (Monday night around 7 pm) a couple of choppers flying low over Derbeth, followed by 3 others between 9 and 9.30. Definitely not Search and Rescue. Flying in all directions. This is definitely getting worse

We have sent an email to Peter Stephen asking him to contact the airport and reply with a response. I will post the reply when i get it and others may have to start putting the pressure on if the result is unsatisfactory.

you can borrow my shotgun. I used it to scare the crows off my roof last year. Mind you Peter has never come back since I showed him both barrells last summer

Although none of us here like helicopters over Kingswells we must only use peaceful forms of protest ! Remember that man in Edinburgh who was jailed for aiming fireworks at low flying planes.

Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd February 6.30 - 9.30 two more great nights for helicopter watching, how come these pilots manage to find their way back from North Sea platforms but then can't find the airport from Kingswells without flying in circles for 20 minutes?

I called the airport on Friday night (1st Feb) and was given this number to call (01224) 725005. It seem to be the right department as the guy told me that it is pilot training and has increased over recent weeks, according to him the go out to the Loch of Skene (where it is non-residental) they take your name and address and apparently send a letter back to confirm the complaint has been logged. Suggest that as many people keep calling to annoy them!!!!

the pilot is either signalling to their partner, that they will be home for his tea in the next hour. Or just checking up on who's "doing" the partner while they have been away.

Well, now we know why the evening helicopters like to fly round Kingswells. Well done to our Councillor for getting this response from the airport, and the posters on this thread for keeping up the pressure. Lets hope the airport do recognize this as a problem and do something to sort it out.

If it wasn't for the helicopters most of you wouldn't be able to afford to stay in Kingswells

I'd be interested to hear your economic arguement behind that comment Pando.
