Just a proper cycle path anywhere would be good. Free of bolts, hundreds of stone chips, broken glass, dog mess, parked cars, buses, pot holes, drain covers with designs made to catch your wheel. Lets make it difficult to cycle anywhere in and around Aberdeen, let just discourage people. Clog up what is called a cycle path and then make them vanish halfway down a road. But those who cycle I have to say are a very friendly bunch and talk to everyone they pass. And I admire their resilience not to give up cycling. I'll still cycle just as I'm a glutten for punishment, but it could be made more inviting so more people take to two wheels instead of four. Claire

Kingswells to Bucksburn is probably a non-starter. The hope is that the Western Peripheral Route will reduce traffic on the back road to Bucksburn which will in turn make it safer to use by cyclists.

"The hope is that the Western Peripheral Route will reduce traffic on the back road to Bucksburn which will in turn make it safer to use by cyclists" If this is the hope of the council roads department, then they have been badly advised. It's likley that many commuters to/from Kingswells will use the quieter back roads, especially since they would have to drive half-way to Westhill to get to the junction to join the by-pass. And with the back road being less busy, traffic will probably be travelling faster. Safer for cycling? Not in my book. The way to make cycling safer is to reduce the average traffic speed, or create fully segregated cycle paths.

As usual the city fathers pay lip service to this issue - having a cycle lane as part of the main carriageway is just plain daft - they should be separate. I wonder if the Market street upgrade contains provision for a proper cycle lane - I doubt it!!
