With the new secondary school planned for Bucksburn, ( I have never understood) why it is not in Kingswells) it would be very prudent to establish a cycle path between Kingswells and Bucksburn There is a path at present but it is very poor. Such a path, totally off road would be safe from traffic. Metalled all the way, avoids dub covered children by the time they get to school. It does seem to have council interest and merit although the council planning process, tortuous to say the least will not see proposals formally tabled for build for at least 2 years, 2008. This route could also link with an upgraded route to Sheddocksley. If we are serious about children's fitness, desire to reduce car miles and get adult traffic off the road it will not happen with the current car route we have between Kingswells and Bucksburn. How about we give the project some impetus from within. Peter Stephen our concillor is very supportive of the project.

Hear, hear This should already be under consideration as part of the "safe routes to schools" programme. A Bucksburn route would also be useful for anyone like myself who wants to cycle to work in Dyce, but is unwilling to risk life and limb on the Newhills road (as well as holding up all the traffic!) Also good for accessing the swimming pool and shops in Bucksburn. Hopefully Cllr Stephen can make more progress on this than the previous incumbent. Other useful people to get on the case might be Sustrans and the Aberdeen Cycle Forum.

I agree. There should be safe routes into town as well. I only use my cycle twice a week and every time I curse who ever designed the cycle route from Kingswells into town. The route from Kingswells to the junction at Anderson Drive is OK. Then it vanishes. There are signs on the pavement, but who's going to cycle down that steep pavement without fear of knocking over someone. And what happens after the traffic lights by the hospital junction? The cycle path winds around the cars and you have to keep your eyes pealed for car doors opening on you, as the hospital staff park up and forget about cyclists legitimately cycling along the path, around their cars – it’s just crazy. Then when you reach the traffic light junction by the two parks – the cycle path disappears again. Do you cycle into the parks and bounce out onto the road? Then the path is an imaginary line that disappears for the rest of the route. I can’t believe who ever designed the cycle path, actually rode the route – if they did they obviously weren’t concentrating on where the path goes and doesn’t go. Take a left out of the Dutch example or even Milton Keynes, build completely separate routes not shared with buses, that just pull out on you, or taxi drivers that race up the bus lane and drive intimidtingly close. People won’t get out of their cars if routes are unclear, unsafe and covered in broken glass and rubbish. Claire
