Can Anyone Suggest what to do.... Their scratching about under the tiles at all hours of the night!!! think its the type of tiles on the roof... have tried cementing up holes/Cracks but they seem to find a new way in? Would "Hot Foot" or something similar work on them... They are starlings by the way and are shitting absolutely everywhere!!!

I had bats & the same problem last year. Expanding foam sealed up the holes where they got in & there was no need to poison their food.

Tp prevent bats from nesting i.e. blocking up entry holes etc. is illegal so stay anonymous guest or the do-gooders will get you. As for the Starling, a high pressure hose (pressure washer type) did the job for me.

Cant believe the double standards regarding the environment. Part of the "price" we pay for not living in the city is we have to share our living space with the local fauna. The birds and bats nesting might be annoying but it is a temporary thing. We have a bat which regularly visits our garden.....they are completely harmless and do a great job of keeping the midgies in check...apparently one bat can eat about 3000 per night. We also have a hedgehog which makes its way through the garden on a regular basis. I have also seen Roe deer (or Bambi as my 4 y.o. grand-daughter christened it) and a badger in Kingswells. If you would rather swap this for city dwelling then go ahead...its your loss!!

In addition we've also had a mole surface and run across the lawn (it didn't stay - too wet sub surface !), a couple of frogs, a fox and several rabbits. We have a great variety of birds here and they do a good job eating midgies to. If they are nesting in your loft wait till winter and block the holes with a fine mesh.

I have been in Kingswells for 9 years and have never seen a midgie. Have to agree that starlings are a real pain. Get the hose out and take the nests down before the birds start to nest, that worked for me.

Never seen a midge in Kingswells ! That must be because the birds I allow to nest round my house and garden are eating your midgies mate, its about time you did your bit for the community and let a few birds nest aswell !

I think I do my bit for the community, good neighbour, put my litter in the bin, drive at 30mph in the village etc... However I admire your community spirit with regards to the starlings, have you room for any more nests?:msn_wink:

Yes room for a few more ! PS, Is it acceptable to shoot the grey squirrels ? A recent report blames them for declining bird populations. My neighbour is a keen BBQ sort of person so I could offer the fresh meat to him.

Excellent, I will send them round. Have you ever tried Grey Squirrel? better pan fried than the BBQ. Having been brought up in the sticks, the grey squirrel was treated as vermin, poor old Mr and Mrs red squirrel are in decline due to their American cousin taking over. If I saw one in my sights, they got both barrels!!

thanks for all your comments - birds now fled the nest - will block up with some netting as apparently starlings nest twice a year!!!
