Any comments people. My 8 year old wants a mobile phone. What age did the rest of you decide to give them at? Of the younger ones who read, how old were you when your parents decided to give you a phone? Anyone also know school policy, ie do they have to hand them over or not allowed to take them at all.

Well I'm a teacher and I generally let the kids leave them on their desks as it saves them fiddling about in their pockets when texting and as long as they pass the jokes onto my phone I see no wrong :msn_wink:. I gave a phone to my 5 year old on her birthday in Feb, I find it handy as I know where she is, if I don't I phone and come 9-10 o clock I can also ring her to tell her to come home to her bed.

That's amazing, you just phone and your 5 year old comes home. I have a real problem getting my 5 year old out of the pub so early.

The last government report i read into the safety of mobile phones stated they were probably ok for adults to use but not children due to their thinner skulls as their brains could absorb more radiation. The professor who conducted the study said he had no problem with using a mobile but would not let his grandchildren. If you must get a mobile for a child get one with a speakerphone.

I gave my kids short-distance walkie-takies they though they were great fun and worked upto about a two mile radius. But once they reached their 10th birthday. I gave them a mobile phone. I find they hardly use it to talk on - it's alway text they use and so the problem of 'potential damage' to the brian is minimal. But the other problem now they are much older is reminding them to keep the phone switched on, because they don't want to be contacted. My son now speaks to his mates using VoIP - it costs nothing and he can be on for hours with out interferring with the normal telephone, PC, TV or mobiles. SO yes, introduce your children to technology, its fun if they are taught a few preauctionary rules.

Hijacking this thread a bit. I love the idea of walkie talkies up to about 2 mile radius. My boy could speak to his friend from his bedroom. Does anyone know a good make rather than suck it and see by buying one without any recommendation on how good they are.

Mobile phones are a good idea for young kids... and I think they should be taught how and when to use them appropriately, i.e. not walking home alone with it out in their hand... if a teenager can be mugged of their phone, a young child is much more vulnerable. I was 16 when I got my first mobile phone, and I don't have a clue how we would all manage without them now.
