Is it just me or are the helicopters back flying really low again. Always seems to stem from a Tuesday onwards - around about this sort of time 18:45. I was in the garage last week raking about tidying up the winter rubbish you have lying around in there, and the garage door shook, and the things on the shelf in the garage shook also. I went outside to see lights flying above my house. there is one hovering around outside as I type. Is there any way we can get rid of these nuances. They seem to go on until 10pm! |

I agree Marcy this is getting worse again.
You can complain to the airport on 01224-348420, this number is manned day and night.
I called in a complaint about Monday night 6pm-9.45pm and agree Tuesday was almost as bad (3 in the air around Kingswells when I got home from work)
Also there was a very interesting DEFRA report published in June ref. Helicopter noise (link below) it will take you a while to read it though !

Marcyboyand Saxon,
Just out of interest, who built your houses? If they are Stewart Milne houses ( kit house aka sheds), that may be the issue, ie noise insulation. I am in a Wimpey house (traditional build), old neighbours both worked for Stewart Milne and bought a Wimpey house, says it all.
If its not a Stewart Milne house, just ignore all the above. |

Yes my House is a SMG house. But I don't see why I should have to put up with the area above my house being used as a helicopter search base, It would be worse If I had children as the Helicopters go on until 10pm some nights.... It keeps me awake If Im having an early night for eg. But I could imagine the impact it would have on families!:wow: I will continue to use this number - thanks Saxon. |

I received this standard reply from the airport, I will post my reply on to the BB at the end of this week.
Dear Sir I refer to the noise complaints which you lodged with Airfield Operations on 25 November 2008 and 9 December 2008 regarding helicopter traffic over your residence. Following receipt of your calls Airfield Operations contacted Air Traffic Control who advised that when helicopters are over flying your area they are conducting standard visual circuits but due to other traffic arriving and departing at Aberdeen Airport they must, on occasions, hold awaiting a suitable gap in traffic to make their approach. When the southerly runway is in use at Aberdeen these holds are conducted to the northwest of the airport, however, with northerly winds being more predominant at this time of year, the northerly runway is more frequently used, requiring aircraft to hold to the southwest of the airport. Please note that your complaint has been logged on our complaints database which is audited annually by Aberdeen City Council in compliance with the terms of our planning consent. Should you have cause for complaint in the future please do not hesitate to call our noise complaints line direct on 01224 348420, all calls to this number are recorded. Yours faithfully

I'm sure that, if you search around, there are a number of systems available to get rid of these annoying aircraft permanently. Google Stinger, that'll give you a good starting point. |

I sent this letter to BAA Aberdeen on the 15th, no reply as yet !
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your letter dated 10/12/08 in response to my complaints about Helicopter noise over Kingswells.
You have stated that Helicopters are ‘held’ over Kingswells awaiting clearance to make their approach to the airport. Could you please advise why the Helicopters must be held over Kingswells, we are surrounded by open countryside, why can’t the Helicopters be held away from the residential area’s until cleared for final approach ? At most this would add a few seconds flying time to their approach.
Additionally with reference to Defra report ‘Research into the improvement of the management of helicopter noise’, published in June 2008. I have attached page 16 of the report and refer specifically to the Air Navigation Orders as set out in the Civil Aviation Act of 1982. Quoting paragraph 4.2.1 ‘’ An aircraft shall not be flown below such height as would enable it, in the event of loss of power to make an emergency landing without causing danger to persons or property on the surface.’’ Clearly, having observed many Helicopters flying circuits over Kingswells there would be little chance of them landing successfully and avoiding crashing onto housing if they suffer a loss of power. Could you please advise if air traffic control intend to comply with this ANO.

Sooty, I've been here for 11 years but its only been the last couple of years that we have suffered from circling helicopters. Kingwells isn't on a flightpath for Helicopers (they tend to head from Dyce to the North Sea !) but we seem to have been adopted as a training / holding circuit area. DYOR

| Saxon, like yourself I have been here for over 11 years. I haven't noticed a difference in the noise of the helicpters, probably just got used to it. I really cant things changing with regards to the helicopters. Apart from this forum, I dont know of any others who have issues with them. |

Hi Sooty & Andy, I know quite a few locals who are irritated by Helicopters flying holding circuits and the man answering the airport noise line gave the impression that he gets lots of calls from Kingswells. However, the DEFRA report previously referred to states that helicopter noise is a complex mix of engine, transmission and rotor noise which some people find more annoying than others ! So I guess we can all be right.

Sooty ??? DYOR Stands for ''Do Your Own Research'' I post on various financial BB's and always finish up with DYOR (as do lots of others) it means don't take the information posted at face value without checking the facts out. I used it here out of habit. I've no idea what you think it means.

I don't know if you are aware, but Aberdeen Airport has open forums where the public can talk directly to the MD. You should ask when the next forum is and you will be invited to attend. It would be an opportunity to discuss the helicopter noise. The forums take place about every 6-8 weeks. I hope this helps. Claire  |
