Going through the difficult process of selecting a secondary school now for my eldest who is P7 at Kingswells School. In addition to the Kingswells zoned school of Bankhead there seems to be a number of alternatives in the surrounding area - Hazelhead, Cults, Westhill. We are fortunate to have an excellent primary school in our community, but I don't know much about the standards of the secondary school options.

Wondering if anyone would care to offer any opinions - perhaps you are also going through the same process now or have done so in the last few years. Any parents out there with children at secondary school care to provide any comments on the school their children attend.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Westhill Academy always used to be the School of choice with Most Kingswells Residents. Due to over capacity schooling / Class sizes etc Aberdeenshire Council started clamping down on this (e.g. Letting Aberdeen City Children into Shire School) I don't know where most would stand with new intakes.

As Mentioned choices are Bankhead & Hazlehead.

Might be worth finding out from your child - where most of his/her friends are going to? Nightmare starting at a new school with no familiar faces.

A while ago I had a discussion with a friend about this and she mentionned that there is quite a limited subject choice at Bankhead. This may have improved but it might be worth checking out what subjects are being offered at the different secondaries.

Thanks for your comments.

I already discussed this at length with my child. Problem is that 5 different friends are going 5 different routes! Apparently last year's block of P7s from Kingswells ended up in 7 different secondary schools. Having the choice of secondary school is great, but can prove difficult at the same time. Much easier in my day when we only had the choice of the zoned school.

I will check our your comments Ellier on the limited syllabus at Bankhead.
